If you’re like me you can never have too many reference books and two things I’ve found with buying them here in NZ is A: no-one ever stocks a halfway decent range, and B: when you do find any here they’re bloody expensive ( $50 RRP for an Osprey Modelling title for example ).

So I recently discovered that I can be an affiliate of the best place I’ve found to buy them from, which is BOOKDEPOSITORY in the UK. Their prices are similar to Amazon, so is the range, but the big bonus is FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING. And if you buy books from overseas you’ll appreciate how much that saves you.

I’ve posted up some sample titles below that are on my “want to get list” ( hmmm, Father’s day is coming up if any wives are reading ), all are between eight and thirteen GBP ( with one major exception ) which currenly equates to between around $18 and $30 and most of them retail here for at least double that.

So I’ve added an affiliate link over on the right-hand side ( can’t miss it ). If you do choose to buy from them please use that link as I then get a small commission on the sales which helps toward making this website fully self sufficient so that I can separate it from the retail sales and keep it as a standalone Kiwi modelling related website.

We now have the Alliance Modelworks ( AM-Works ) 8.8 cm FlaK 37 (Sf) auf Fgst Zgkw 18t conversion, for mounting an 8.8cm FlaK 37 to an Sd.Kfz.9 FAMO, in stock. I’m aiming to have an in-box review of this up this week and will also be doing a build log as soon as I get a DML FlaK 37 in, as well as a few other parts I want to add to the base FAMO as well ( and figured this was the ideal time to do it ).

Website only price is $199.95 plus shipping.

Just a quick addendum to the below. I’ve had a comments block added to the community pages so that people can use it as a sort of chat area. It’s not perfect and I’m still pursuing the idea of a simple forum but it’s a start.

You can use this for things like looking for a particular part for a kit, looking for a club or contact in a particular area, “ie Looking For Other Modellers in Waikikamukau, preferably female between 18 and 25 ” and suchlike.

We’ve added a new resource page which you’ll now find on the top right. This page is open to any New Zealand modelling related, community oriented, information that readers of this site wish to share. You’re welcome to add your own personal details if you’re looking to find other modellers in your town/area, club details can be added for various groups looking to gather in new members, or it can be used for any non-profit announcments.

Right now it is in its infancy and I’m open to suggestions for how this might evolve, but the key theme to it right now is just a resource to help modellers from throughout New Zealand connect with one another.

I’m expecting it to take time to grow, currently although we get 10,000-12,000 visits a month 65% of those are from overseas and we have waaaaaay more readers than commenters so I’m sure it’ll take time for people to come in from the shadows. But it’s there for people to use and I hope people will.

I decided to take a punt on a lesser known PE manufacturer from the U.S., Alliance Modelworks ( or AM-Works ), and I’m glad I did. It’s mostly generic stuff so far, WWII razor wire, KV and T34 screens, German and British equipment tiedowns and straps etc, generic bolt heads, washers, screw heads etc plus some very nice FlaK 38 and FlaK 37 sets with mags, boxes and ammo, as well as barrels for the FlaK 38.

They also do a range of uniform decals that include small PE frets with things like badges and medals which are very nice.

I must say I was very impressed with the quality of these, not to mention that several use the connectorless technique that means no cutting or clean-up needed. Most importantly for the NZ Market they’re also well priced. I’ll have a small range up on TradeMe on Monday so people can check them out but I’m happy to field any questions over the weekend as I’m able.

And for those who made the connection to the name AM-Works we will also be carrying their Sd.Kfz. 9 “FAMO” 8.8cm FlaK 37 conversion when it becomes available later this month.

We’ve decided to try our hand at some earlywar or prewar armour, partly due to personal interest. This means looking to some of the more obscure manufacturers, so we are now stocking a limited range of kits from Mirage Hobby, RPM and Roden. We’ll see how they go and then decide whether or not to persevere with them.

We also have the IBG Einheitsdeisel trucks and the detail sets for them now available.

We also have a range of vacuum formed 1/35 scale buildings from T.M. Diorama, including some nice looking barn and shed ones, as well as decal and detail sets from AM-Works which we’ll have up for sale as soon as I’ve finished sorting through them.

Check out or Kits For Sale on TradeMe for more details.

Things have been quite around here the last few days so my apologies for the lack of new reviews and articles. The school holidays are upon us and with four daughters aged eight to fifteen the requirement for a work from home dad to change focus to the various delivieries hither and thither have kept me away from the keyboard. Not that that has been a bad thing necessarily as it has allowed me some time to get back to the modelling itself. Though again that has been limited because much as I appreciate their interest in my hobby there’s just something about assorted tweens perched around the table watching everything you do that interferes with your concentration.

You have to love your kids though. My eldest turned fifteen on Friday and is off on holiday to visit her boyfriend next week and I suddenly feel old. Well, older. Where do the years go. Suddenly I have had a modelling midlife crisis and have great urges to make huge inroads into the stash. So expect to see a myriad of incoherent build logs over the next few weeks till I run out of steam. I’ve decided I shall build many and paint few, then come summer there shall be a great letting of paint and I shall probably blow up my compressor again.

Today I put knife to plastic on my next build, the Opel Blitz 120mm Mortar Carrier, and waiting in the wings for when I have a moment in the Opel build that bores me is a Pz.Kpfw. IV to which I will be adding zimmerit as a guide for this blog, but which at the end will donate its turret to a Panther chassis and in return will receive a 2cm Flakvierling 38 to make this field modified DIY Flakpanzer IV.

I’m in a bit of a Frankenstein mood which means the next few kits to hit the worktable can expect to be turned into some form or another of a one off field modified vehicles. It helps me to break the shackles of boredom that sometimes come from doing the mundane, the boring, the routine that is a tank that looks like a thousand other tanks.

And then I shall build a StuG. Safe, beloved StuG.

Actually by then I’ll have probably changed my mind ten times.

Next week we will have the IBG Einheitsdiesel Kfz. 61 Fernsprechbetriebskraftwagen ( Heavy Telephone Exchange Van ) and Einheitsdiesel Pritschenwagen as well as the photo-etch detail set for the Pritschenwagen and the interior multimedia set for the Fernsprechbetriebskraftwagen. Some of these are already presold so we only have a couple left.

Prices on the trucks are $72.95 via the website, or they will be on TradeMe for $74.95. The PE set for the Pritschenwagen is $42.95/$44.95 and the interior set for the Fernsprechbetriebskraftwagen is $124.95/$129.95. Not cheap but well worth it.

We will also be trialling sales of a few new brands, Roden, Mirage, RPM, and TM Diorama who make buildings similar to Miniarts. These are cheaper kits and we won’t know how good they are till we get out grubby little paws on them but I’m aiming to get a few reviews up as soon as I can once they are here.

Just a quick update to say that things have been a little quiet around here lately while I’ve been fighting of a chest infection so my apologies for not getting around to some of the build logs and guides that I had wanted to tackle over the past couple of weeks.

I’ve also exhausted all the preprepared reviews and articles that I had on standby so things will be a bit quiet for the next few days but I will do my best to get right back into the saddle next week.

Not a book review from myself this time, but from one of my favourite sites.

.

“HOME : Civilian New Zealanders Remember the Second World War” by Alison Parr

Read the review HERE on www.bookiemonster.co.nz

.

This sounds like a great book for any New Zealander with an interest in their wartime heritage, or for anyone interested in any Home Front for that matter.

.

You can also go in a draw to win a copy HERE

.

So check it out and good luck if you enter.
