Tamiya At Nuremburg

Yesterday it was all DML with some timely news releases just before the show opened, this morning we have a list of what Tamiya will be releasing shortly, though as yet no images ( hopefully they’ll get those out very soon ). Nothing unexpected I’m afraid as the new 1/35 line-up has been known for a week or so ( though I do look forward to the Kfz.70 ), but there are some interesting re-releases that will be welcomed back by some.

For those who wonder what the difference is with the Krupp Protze, the original one is the Kfz.69 Artillery tractor version, this one is the Kfz.70 Personell Carrier and should come as no surprise when you consider Tamiya released this in 1/48 not so long ago.

New 1/35 Scale Releases

  • 1/35 WWII German Africa Corps Infantry Set
  • 1/35 6X4 Truck Krupp Protze (Kfz.70) Personnel Carrier
  • 1/35 U.S. Tank T26E4 “Super Pershing” (Pre-Production)
  • 1/35 WWII German Military Insignia Decal Set (Africa Corps/Waffen SS)

1/35 Scale Re-Releases

  • 1/35 M113A1 Fire Support Vehicle
  • 1/35 German Sd.Kfz.250/3 Greif
  • 1/35 U.S. M60A3 105mm Gun Tank
  • 1/35 German 8ton Semi Track Sd.Kfz.7

The old Tamiya Krupp isn’t that bad a kit, which can be improved with some imagination, reference and a smattering of skillz.
This ‘new’ kit isn’t – it looks to me like a rebox of the kit from the 70s with a sprue from the German Weapons set and a couple of crew figures from the Famo kit.
Not really good enough, considering the way the ‘competition’ are coming out with new releases of prevously unmodelled softskins.

Yeah I’m hoping they’ve at least included some new parts like they did with the Sd.Kfz.232 and Steyr when they gave them the DAK treatment but they do seem to have fallen into a habit of just re-releasing old kits as well as giving them a dress up with new figures and calling them a new kit ( the Russian SPGs, the Carius Jagdtiger, Ardennes KT, Ford GPA, Tiger I early, to name a few ). I think the problem is that five years ago releasing one or two new kits a year was fine, and they still do. But now you have the likes of DML releasing what seems like one a week and others doing a decent line in a year as well and Tamiya has taken to make-overs to keep their line-up looking “fresh” instead of producing new kits ( or even new variants, I’d be happy to see them do a few variants on the FAMO ).

Hey dean how long before we see these kits in NZ?
Man I like the africa korps,I want some now.

  3. Bart says:

so that truck is different from the old Krupp that I first built 20 years ago? Pre to the one towing the 37mm?

Looks the same but with different extra bits to me.

    • Dean says:

To be honest I suspect it’s the old 35104 kit given a refresh and with the new figures and extra parts added. I’ve got one in the cupboard somewhere. Either way I’m happy to see it back ( I’d be even happier if DML were to take their 1/72 version and produce it in 1/35 ) as although I like the 69 it has more limited use than the 70.
