As a general rule I’m not a big user of resin figures, though I know that many are. I do however like to use resin heads like the ones made by Hornet, primarily as one of the areas that can let down an otherwise good figure is a badly defined face. The other reason is that often the facial expression doesn’t match the intended pose. So sets like this have a great deal of use when it comes to improving the face without having to recarve it yourself.
This set of twelve heads from Legend Productions represents an assortment of German heads wearing an assortment of headgear. I won’t bore you by describing each as the photos are pretty self explanatory. The photo where they look grey is from Legend’s own website, in grey possibly because they have the same problem I do with trying to photograph pale cream resin.
These are very well sculpted with the facial expressions looking very good indeed. There is some minor mould flashing to clean up and removing the pour plugs takes a little care. They’re not hard to remove but one row has them moulded to the tops of the heads which means being careful to maintain the right look once the pour plug is removed. The only head that has any problems is the one with the headphones. His face is good ( though on this set he had an airbubble in his chin ) and the head even includes the throuatmike, but the headphone strap is a little wonky and looks much better cut away and replaced with a PE version ( or even thin strips of heavy paper ).
One thing I have found with a lot of resin heads is the tendancy to overdo the facial features resulting in everyone having high cheekbones and an overly emaciated look. That’s fine if you’re modelling the German 6th Army in it’s final days but sometimes you just want a nice healthy looking full cheeked face. That’s what you get here, a nice balance of extreme expressions, normal faces and just that correct “human look”.
Compared to some other resin head sets these compare well. The finish may be a little rougher than some but the value can’t be beaten as this set of 12 heads costs as much as some single heads. That’s the sort of value for money that can’t be beaten. Good looking and good value for money.
