Kit Review : Masterbox D-Day, June 6th 1944

When Saving Private Ryan came out it inspired a new interest in the Second World War and in particular the D-Day landings on Omaha beach by the U.S. forces, so anyone familiar with the movie will see what this kit encapsulates – U.S. Infantry storming the beaches at Normandy.

The kit comes on a single sprue moulded in dark tan. It contains four figures in standard US ETO uniforms with the long gaiters, and a range of weapons and equipment. There is also a small decal sheet included with rank and uniform insignias which is enough to do more than the four figures in the kit.

The mouldings are good with nice sharp detail on the uniforms, webbing and faces ( perhaps a little soft on some of the creaees and folds but that could just be me being fussy ). There is a small amount of cleanup required with very small amounts of flash and some mould seams to remove. Fit and finish is good with just a small ammount of filling and sanding required to eliminate all the join lines completely.

You get two M1 Garand rifles and a Thompson SMG as well as a flamethrower for the fourth figure. One figure is also carrying two banglore torpedos in their long carry-case. The presence of the flamethrower and Banglores would indicate that these would be members of an engineer unit. Personal equipment is the usual canteens and ammo pouches plus a small backpack and entrenching tool for one, and a holstered sidearm for another.

Assembly and painting instructions are provided on the reverse of the box giving the paint numbers for Vallejo, Tamiya, Lifecolour, Humbrol and Agama paints.

A good little kit that portrays the motion of running up the beach very well, but of course could be used in any post Normandy setting as well.
