Masterbox has a reputation for making figure sets that offer mini-dioramas in a box with subjects which go outside the normal “man with a gun pointing, walking or running”, and so it is with this offering. This comes in the usual Masterbox box with opening flap-ends and comes on two dark yellow sprues which hold the six figures, two dogs, guard box, lift up barrier and metal vehicle obstacle.
The figures consist of three German MPs and a civilian family of mum, dad and a child and are well moulded with good facial detail, the woman looking like a woman, the child looking like a child. There is a small ammount of flash and faint mould seams to clean up and a little trimming and filling once assembled, mainly as the greatcoats and skirts have separate parts for the lower parts around the legs so there are a lot of join lines. The dogs are also well moulded and well textured. Weapons and personal equipment is provided for the three German figures and a suitcase is provided for the civilians.
The guard hut is made up of six parts. There is no wood texturing which may be a negative to some. Personally I think woodgraining is overdone and gives a rough cut look to wooden items that are supposed to be painted anyway. But if it bothers you a quick, light pass over with a roughish grit sandpaper will add grain. The barrier arm is made up of fourteen pieces and can be raised and lowered.
Assembly and painting instructions are provided on the reverse of the box giving the paint numbers for Vallejo, Tamiya, Lifecolour, Humbrol and Agama paints.
A very interesting little set that provides a number of useful items, not least of all the civilian figures which are sorely lacking in 1/35 unless you look at resin figures. The dogs are also a nice touch. Definitely a kit to get if you’re looking for German MPs and civilians.
